Low Back Pain and Headaches. Is there a connection

We decided to post this blog about low back and headaches, is there a connection, because we've been seeing many people that have both.

In today's world, most people sit for a living. They sit at a computer or desk, stare at a computer. Then after work, most often people rush home, sit down to eat and then veg out in front of the T.V. to wind down.

For headache suffers, this is one of the worst positions one could possibly be in! Not only does it create headaches, it creates low back pain.

Here, at the Omaha Headache, we see many people that have both. Often those people that have both, their headache will be the worse of the two, minimizing the pain of the low back pain. Once their headaches are gone, sometimes they realize how much the low back does hurt.

So, the posture of the low back can definitely affect headaches!

Omaha Migraine Clinic

Statistics show that a substantially higher percentage of women suffer from migraines than men. The Migraine Special Issue www.ebandolier.com shows a range for women of between 11.9% and 21.9% and for men between 4.0% and 8.2%. The weighted mean prevalence for women was 17% and for men was 6%.

An average of three weeks are lost every year by female migraine sufferers incapacitated by their condition, kept from attending work or school and often missing family and social events.
Three quarters of these women feel they lack control over their lives, they feel misunderstood and say they must often face the cynicism of people near them because of their condition. Their suffering can be compounded by isolation and a lack of understanding from those close to them, either at home or at work.

According to the Vicoria Headache Clinic in Vicoria, B.C., women who have had children routinely present with a greater difference in the heights of the posterior superior iliac spines than in women who have not had children. It is our contention that the pelvic girdle can potentially be pulled further out of alignment during the final trimester by the imbalanced musculature of the buttock and lower back areas as the joints of the pelvis prepare for delivery.
This suggests the probabability of higher levels of compensation above the pelvis in order to keep the torso neck and head upright and facing forward.

Those suffering headaches seem to have many other problems pop up once their headaches come under control. One problem we see is low back pain.

Maybe the headache pain is so much worse than the back pain, that once the headache is gone, you can start to feel the back pain. Maybe.

But what about the biomechanics behind the headache in the first place. When someone has headaches, often there is a biomechanical problem. We see the head in front of the body, which stresses the muscles at the base of the skull, irritating the nerves, creating the headache. But why low back pain?

Low back pain can start from headaches. What?! Get real, right. Wrong. Because of this anterior head carriage (head in front of the body), the body responds by flexing the spine, including the lumbar spine (low back). Flexion is one of the worst positions for the low back to be in and one of the most common positions to be in. Now, compound this with a whiplash or auto accident where sitting in the car flexes the back. You are sitting and getting hit from behind, whipping the head back and forth. This leaves your body vulnerable to serious injuries if not addressed early and properly.

So, when we get rid of your headaches and you start feeling the low back hurt, it isn't too uncommon. That is why at the Omaha Headache Clinic we stress posture education and do something about it.

Waking up with Headaches-Omaha

Do you ever wake up with headaches or wake up in the middle of the night from headaches? If so, you aren't alone. Many of my patients wake up with headaches. After blood pressure, caffeine, and other factors are ruled out, we need to look at how you sleep.

When you wake up, do you find yourself in the fetal position or on your belly? Or lets count the number of pillows you use and how they are used. I am guilty of belly sleeping and used to be guilty of using many pillows. Trust me, its a hard habit to break! VERY HARD! But sometimes necessary. When we have determined how you sleep and fixing it, we need to look at other factors.

Your posture: biomechanical & structural posture. Posture is a HUGE contributor to pain, headaches, neck pain, dizziness, tinnitus and a whole host of other problems.
This posture I am talking about doesn't mean just sitting up straighter. It is the actual shape of your spine regardless of how straight you stand. It also means which muscles are tight and which need strengthened. Pillows-any "fancy, curve correcting pillow"- at this point, in my opinion, a waste of money.

Does every medical professional or chiropractor look at posture: No. Do they know how to treat either of these problems: NO. Does just adjusting, throwing on e-stim pads and ultrasound work for headaches: NO, NO, NO. If it did I would not be as busy as I am. If I had a dime for every time I heard "I've been going to a chiropractor........................." I would be one rich woman!
